The demand for CBD products around the world is rising each day. The main thing contributing to the popularity of CBD products is the wide range of therapeutic properties possessed by CBD. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the 113 active cannabinoid compounds present in the hemp and marijuana plants.

The CBD is mainly extracted from the hemp instead of marijuana because of the low amount of THC in the hemp plant. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid compound that creates a euphoric sensation. In the United States, the CBD products are illegal in the THC content in that product is higher than 0.3 %.

There are many factors that determine the quality of a CBD product and the method od extraction used is one of them. Millions of people around the world are realizing the benefits of CBD and start using different forms of CBD products to treat your anxiety, depression, chronic pain, arthritis, insomnia, epilepsy, skin problems, etc.

What Is The Need Of CBD Extraction?

The main reason why CBD extraction is necessary is to make the consumption of hemp products a less pleasant experience. The extraction will help in separating the cannabinoid and making it into a concentrated form for easy consumption.

Common CBD Extraction Methods

There are mainly three types of CBD extraction methods that are used by the CBD manufacturing companies. They are olive oil extraction, solvent extraction, and CO2 extraction.

Olive Oil Extraction

This type of CBD extraction is considered one of the oldest methods of CBD extraction. Many experts consider olive oil extraction as the best CBD extraction method out there. One of the biggest advantages of olive oil extraction is that it can also be performed in our homes. The first step in olive oil extraction is decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation involves the process of heating the plant material. The material is heated to a certain temperature and only for a specific time period. This process is for activating all the chemicals present in the plant. It is recommended to heat the plant material at 284-degree Fahrenheit for activating the chemicals. After this process, the plant material is mixed with olive oil and heated again for about 2 hours at 212-degree Fahrenheit to extract the cannabinoids.

The olive oil is not evaporated in the process, which means the extract won’t be as concentrated. Therefore, CBD users have to measure the dosage accordingly. Many people choose olive oil extraction because it is very cheap. You have to keep it in a dark, cool area because it is highly perishable.

Solvent Extraction

As the name suggests, this method of CBD extraction uses solvents like propane, ethanol, butane, or alcohol for separating CBD from the plant material. Like olive oil extraction, solvent extraction is also inexpensive. It is one of the quickest ways to extract CBD and it is also one of the easiest methods. The solvents used in the extraction methods are highly flammable, so you have to take precautions while performing it.

The solvent extraction method dissolves the plant waxes that contain a lot of essential nutrients for the human body. In addition to the cannabinoids present in the plant material, solvent extraction also extracts the chlorophyll, which is responsible for the bitter taste of some CBD oil products. The first step in the solvent extraction method is putting the plant trimmings and flowers into a large container.

In the second step, the solvent used in the extraction process is allowed to run through the plant material. Running the solvent through the plant material will separate the cannabinoids. The last step in the solvent extraction is evaporation, which leaves the cannabinoids in a concentrated oil form. One drawback of this extraction method is that there may be a small amount of solvent residue in the final extract, which can be toxic.

CO2 Extraction

This method of CBD extraction is gaining huge popularity all over the world. Most of the reputable CBD manufacturers use CO2 extraction to separate cannabinoids from the plant material. This is mainly because CO2 extraction is the safest CBD extraction method available right now. Even though it is an expensive and complex extraction method, it helps to extract the cannabinoid without any impurities.

The CO2 extraction method uses supercritical carbon dioxide for separating the active cannabinoids from the plant material. At the beginning of the extraction process, pressurized CO2 is allowed to run through a chamber that holds the plant material. This process will separate the cannabinoids from the hemp and both CO2 and the separated oil will be pumped into another chamber.

In the final stage of the CO2 extraction, the CO2 in the mixture is allowed to evaporate. This will leave the pure, concentrated CBD extract at the bottom of the chamber. The resulting extract will be pure because there won’t be any impurities in the extract. This extraction method needs heavy equipment and large chambers, which makes it very expensive.
