CBD is one among the hundreds of cannabinoids found in cannabis. It has attained immense popularity due to its multiple therapeutic benefits and non-intoxicating property. CBD products may come with other cannabinoids and compounds in cannabis. They also come without any cannabis compounds other than CBD.

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD that contains 99% CBD.

In this article, we cover the steps involved in making CBD isolate at home.

Step 1: Decarboxylate The Flower

Hemp flower is rich in CBD but the raw flower will contain CBD in the form of CBDA (Cannabidiolic acid). The process of decarboxylation is essential to obtain CBD from the CBDA.

Decarboxylation is a simple process that can be carried out with the application of heat. You only need to heat the high CBD flower in an oven.

Step 2: Extraction Of CBD Oil From The Flower

After the flower is activated, the next step is extracting CBD from the plant matter. Industrial manufacturing of CBD oil uses various extraction methods like CO2 extraction for the process but that is not practical at home.

A simple CBD extraction process you can execute at home is cold ethanol extraction that can be done with simple instruments and appliances that you find in every household.

Step 3: Winterization

The output of the previous step is crude CBD oil and it has to be refined in this step. Because isolate is the purest form of CBD available, we have to use utmost caution to remove waxes, chlorophyll, and other undesirable substances from the crude CBD oil.

The refinement process called winterization will remove all impurities from the oil and leave a clear substance that can be used in the next step in CBD isolate creation.

Step 4: Create CBD Distillate

CBD distillate is a viscous and clear liquid that contains 80-95% CBD. Making CBD distillate is the final step in the creation of CBD isolate.

We can use short path distillation for convenience. Although creating a distillation set up at home is possible, it isn’t that easy as well. However, there are distillation kits coming at affordable rates.

The quality of the CBD isolate you make at home depends on the source of CBD flower, containers and equipment you use in the process, and more. Avoid using plastic or silicon containers while making CBD isolate and use stainless steel containers instead. This can effectively prevent any chemicals from leaching into your final product.
