CBD found in the hemp plant is popular among users for its therapeutic and medical benefits. Due to this, it has been removed from the list of schedule 1 drugs as it does not pose the risk of developing an addiction. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) followed suit because its therapeutic effects like anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects are useful for athletes. But THC is still banned, and hemp CBD products containing it can disqualify them. So, the ideal cannabidiol product for athletes is CBD isolate; read on to know more about it.
CBD, A Game Changer For Professional Athletes
CBD health benefits along with its lack of side effects at normal doses make it an ideal substitute for pharmaceutical analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. It is a well-known fact that minor injuries and trauma are part and parcel of the life of athletes. Due to cannabidiol’s therapeutic effects, many professional athletes are using CBD products in their training regimen for faster recovery and to improve their performance.
The WADA allows them to use cannabidiol products made from hemp plants because it has minuscule amounts, i.e. 0.3% of psychotropic THC. Even though this amount will not produce high, it has the potential for giving positive drug test results that can disqualify athletes from participating in sporting events. This can be avoided by using CBD isolate, i.e. 99% pure CBD, as it does not contain other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids naturally found in the hemp plant.
CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD and is 100% THC free, and it has a white crystalline powder appearance. So, athletes can safely use products formulated using it like creams, balms, topical sprays, etc., as part of their training regimen.
Making CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is made from cannabidiol-rich hemp extracts that are extracted using the CO2 extraction process. It is then refined through a multistage process to remove unwanted compounds and plant materials like chlorophyll, waxes, cannabinoids, and other oils. This is followed by the winterization process where the purified extract is mixed with 200 proof alcohol, stirred vigorously, and the mixture is placed in a deep freezer overnight. By this process, the remaining undesirable compounds like lipids and waxes will freeze and coagulate, and they can be filtered out. Next, the winterized extract is decarboxylated, i.e. heated to evaporate the alcohol and convert raw CBDA into CBD.
The decarboxylated hemp CBD extract undergoes fractional distillation to remove terpenes and other contaminants. This is then mixed with a non-polar solvent and heated. The mixture is then cooled to precipitate out pure CBD crystals, and they are washed with the same non-polar solvent to remove any residual contaminants. Finally, the isolate is placed in a vacuum for 48 hours to get 99% pure CBD isolate.
CBD isolate is highly potent, and because of this, there is the risk of overdosing. Therefore, you need to be careful about the dosage while using it. Also, it is highly effective when used as a topical product as it gives quick localized relief.
